NURSE PRACTITIONER

Sister Debbie Gumbley RGN, RM, Dip PNS, MSc and Nurse Prescriber

After many years as a Practice Nurse Sister Gumbley undertook a three-year Masters Degree course at University to become a Nurse Practitioner.  This is a new and developing nursing role incorporating skills, which are closely interlinked with that of GP colleagues and include physical examination, ordering investigations and tests, prescribing medication for minor illness and chronic diseases plus direct referral and liaison with secondary care.

The Nurse Practitioner complements and supports the GP and Practice Nurse roles, but more importantly provides an additional and alternative healthcare professional for patients with minor illness and chronic diseases.

PRACTICE NURSES

All our Practice Nurses have general responsibility in primary interventions, health promotion and education.  Their role also encompasses implementation of new health initiatives and guidelines.

Sister Nicki Pye, RGN, Dip Asthma and Nurse Prescriber

  • Specialist interest in Asthma
  • Assists in minor surgery
  • Qualified to advise on minor illnesses

Sister Lyndsey Samuels, RGN, BSc Nursing Studies

  • Lead nurse for smoking cessation clinics
  • Lead nurse for COPD

Sister Andrea Smithson, RGN, BSc Nursing Studies

  • Qualified to advise on minor illnesses

The Practice Nurses are available for appointments daily at all three surgeries.  Please telephone to arrange suitable appointments.

The Practice Nurses are fully qualified to carry out:-

  • Health Promotion – Well Person checks
  • Blood Pressure checks and the taking of blood samples
  • Immunisations for adult travellers and advice on precautions when abroad
  • Cervical smears and breast examination
  • Dressing and removal of sutures
  • Ear syringing and dietary advice
  • Childhood immunisations

Our Nurses also review and update repeat medications, provide a full family-planning service and run clinics for asthma and smoking cessation.

Mrs Linda Spedding 

This post was newly created within the Practice during 2004 and provides support and assistance to the Nursing Team by dealing with patients requiring new patient checks, routine blood tests and blood pressure monitoring. Both of our Health Care Assistants are experienced phlebotomists.
